Despina Stokou (b. 1978, Athens) lives and works in Los Angeles. Stokou studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and at the University of Arts in Berlin. Idealism, feminism and a strong use of painterly tradition characterize her work. Stokou makes paintings that explore popular culture and political debates as mediated by contemporary public forums. She does so, by creating artworks that are created by monochrome slashes and drips scuffling with waves of smeared or overlapping text. These texts are made of words taken from public dialog and are a direct reaction to increasingly disillusioned social contexts. She has been exhibited numerously both nationally and internationally at Kunstverein Gera, Gera DE; KW Institute of Contemporary Art, Berlin DE; Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis US; and the Center for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow UK. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections such as the Deutsche Bank Collection; Schwartz Collection, Harvard; and Zabludowicz Collection.
