Aleksandar Todorovic Serbian, b. 1982

Aleksandar Todorovic (b. 1982, Belgrade, Serbia) lives and works in Belgrade, Serbia. He received his MFA from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2007. Todorovic’s practice draws on the visual language and materials of Byzantine icon painting to address contemporary political and social realities. Working with traditional techniques such as egg tempera on hand-carved wooden panels and the application of gold and palladium leaf, he reinterprets religious iconography as a framework for examining systems of power, ideology, and collective belief. By merging sacred visual traditions with contemporary symbols, logos, and references to mass culture, his works construct layered narratives that explore themes of conflict, morality, propaganda, and the cyclical nature of historical events. Selected exhibitions include presentations at Museum Halle Saint-Pierre, Paris, France; Contemporary Art Gallery at the Museum of Smederevo, Smederevo, Serbia; Narodni muzej Valjevo, Valjevo, Serbia; Ningbo Art Museum, Ningbo, China; and Nadežda Petrović Memorial Gallery, Čačak, Serbia, as well as exhibitions at Galerie Arts Factory, Paris, France, and Richard Heller Gallery, Los Angeles, USA. His work was included in the publication 100 Painters of Tomorrow, Thames & Hudson, London, UK, and is held in collections including the Dakis Joannou Collection, Athens, Greece.
