Maja Djordjevic Serbian, b. 1990

Maja Djordjevic (b. 1990, Belgrade, Serbia) lives and works in London, UK. Djordjevic completed her Bachelor and Master studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Arts in Belgrade, Serbia. Djordjevic’s practice examines the relationship between digital visual languages and contemporary psychological space through a distinctly analogue painting process. Working meticulously with oil and enamel on canvas, she constructs pixelated compositions entirely by hand, translating the visual syntax of early digital imagery into physical painting. While her earlier works focused on stylized figures, her recent paintings shift toward surreal interior environments inspired by internet mythology—particularly the notion of “backrooms,” endless and uncanny office-like spaces that evoke memory, absence, and emotional residue. Through flattened spatial structures and deliberately pixelated surfaces, her work explores themes of isolation, repetition, and the lingering psychological imprint of digital culture. Selected exhibitions include Ludwig Museum, Cologne; MODEM Modern and Contemporary Arts Centre, Debrecen; Museum im Bellpark, Kriens; Arsenal Contemporary Art, New York; Perrotin, Paris; Phillips X, London; Longtermhandstand, Budapest; and participation in the 57th October Art Salon Biennial, Belgrade. Her work is included in the collections of M WOODS Museum, Beijing, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Collection, Madrid.
