Cammie Staros American, b. 1983

Cammie Staros (b. 1983, Nashville, TN) lives and works in Los Angeles. Drawing on the visual language and sculptural traditions of classical antiquity, Staros creates ceramic works that bring ancient forms into dialogue with contemporary materials, techniques, and ideas. Through references to Greco-Roman vessels, mythology, and historical iconography, her sculptures explore how cultural narratives are constructed, preserved, and reinterpreted over time and what the relics of ancient empires might tell us about our current moment.

Staros received her BA from Brown University and her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at the SCAD Museum of Art, Pitzer College Art Galleries, Providence College Galleries, Shulamit Nazarian, Lefebvre & Fils, and Ghebaly Gallery, among others. A recipient of the 2020 Guggenheim Fellowship, her work is held in the permanent collections of the Seattle Art Museum, SCAD Museum of Art, and Hood Museum of Art.
