The surrounding grid adds further layers of carefully painted vignettes of items significant to the sitters, down to the seemingly arbitrary smiley face that in fact reproduces a metal sign from the couples’ front yard, and to their covering veils that were imagined based on the patterns of blankets and furniture found at the sitters’ house. This, Fallah says, is “portraiture as an archeological dig”.2of 2
